Doctoral Candidate / Psychotherapist

adam Clevenger.greener.sharperValues and Philosophy

I believe counseling is an innately playful space, involving a process of creation, development, and transformation that eases and promotes individual growth and greater life fulfillment. As someone who views the world from a constructionist lens, I tend to believe in multiple truths, acknowledging the complexities and multiplicities that arise in our lifetime and challenge our beliefs, self-concepts, and ideas about the diversity of human experience. Our ability to rise and successfully meet the challenges and obstacles that occur in life is dependent on the awareness and implementation of our inner strengths and values; our flexibility, and openness to new perspectives; and, our willingness to experience and accept life’s discomforts that are difficult to avoid. The therapeutic process is meant to help increase resiliency, flexibility, creativity, and a willingness to experience all of life’s opportunities in order to fulfill our greatest, individual potential.

As a strength-based counselor, I work to establish a genuine relationship with my clients, emphasizing teamwork and encouraging the client’s active participation to help identify realistic solutions to life’s challenges. I use an integrative approach to counseling that includes the use of cognitive behavioral strategies and mindfulness techniques to increase self-compassion, instill hope, and restore the self-confidence needed to facilitate personal growth, wellness, and greater life fulfillment. I most frequently rely on the tenets of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), as well as interpersonal and feminist theories to guide the therapeutic process. I believe that counseling can be fun, and so I really enjoy incorporating humor into the process.

Training and Experience

I received my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology & Sociology in 2010 and a Master of Arts in Counselor Education in 2012 from The Ohio State University. I am currently a doctoral candidate at The Ohio State University with a specialization in gender and sexuality, and I am working towards completion of my sexual health certificate (sex therapy & sexuality education) in the School of Social Work at the University of Michigan. I have previous clinical experience in school, college counseling, and private practice settings, and have really enjoyed my prior work with graduate students.

I bring particular training and expertise around sexual health concerns, human sexual functioning & behavior, and sexual expression. I am kink-knowledgeable and fetish-friendly, and passionate about supporting the existence and development of diverse identities and perspectives. Much of my graduate work has focused on men’s health and wellness, as well as issues relating to gender socialization and sexuality concerns.
