Graduate Internships

Live Oak offers graduate internship experiences for individuals studying a variety of disciplines. These include, but are not limited to: social work, counseling, psychology, marriage & family therapy, recreation therapy, and art therapy.

General Overview of the Program

Live Oak requires a twelve month commitment, from June 2017 to June 2018, regardless of the graduate program’s academic calendar. We request this schedule because we are committed to providing both a quality experience to our students and continuity to the clients we serve. We will not accept any applicants who cannot fulfill this commitment. We do not provide partial year internships. Graduate interns are also required to achieve 500 hours of direct client service, regardless of the graduate program’s clinical requirements.

Live Oak offers a unique internship experience, unlike any other in the Chicago land area. In addition to weekly individual supervision and group supervision, graduate interns will have access to a broad range of clinical experience and training. This includes monthly 3 hour trainings on our core competency areas (LGBTQ affirmative practice, multisystemic/multicultural practice, creative expressive modalities, and trauma informed practice), access to over 20 full time staff with a variety of backgrounds and experiences, opportunities to co-facilitate group therapy, etc.

We believe in providing each student with as varied an experience as possible. Graduate interns spend 24 hours per week, on site, engaged in Live Oak activities which may include: therapy with individuals and couples, co-facilitating groups; program development; training; individual and group supervision; outreach; and administrative activities. Interns work with a largely adult client population, and are unlikely to see individuals under the age of 20 years old. Throughout the course of the 12 month internship, graduate interns are expected to complete 500 hours of direct client contact.
