2016 Valuing Difference Scholarship Announcement

The Live Oak Valuing Difference Scholarship Committee has chosen recipients for the 2nd Annual Awards. Out of the record 49 applications received, three candidates stood out for their past and current contributions, which align with one of Live Oak’s core values: that growth and connection are enhanced more from our differences than from our similarities. These candidates are making a significant impact in their communities to recognize the consequences of privilege, oppression, discrimination, and stigma, and practice psychotherapy, social work, and social justice in ways that affirm the value of difference.

Tabitha Mpamira-Kaguri will use the Valuing Difference Scholarship to continue pursuing a Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. She plans to increase her knowledge in identity development, complex trauma, and loss and resilience, in order to serve the EDJA Foundation in responding to the rape crisis in rural Uganda as well as the marginalized individuals in her community.

Luciano Lima is currently completing a Clinical PsyD degree at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy in Chicago. Luciano researches Latinx identity development and works primarily with Latinx and African American youths. He plans to use the Valuing Difference Scholarship to attend conferences that focus on Multiculturalism in order to advance his goal of bringing social justice activism to the forefront of the psychology profession.

Alison Vodnoy Wolf is currently completing an MA degree in Dance/Movement Therapy and Counseling at Columbia College. Alison plans on using the Valuing Difference Scholarship toward co-creating a diversity training with certified sexologist, Rena McDaniel. The training brings awareness to heteronormative perspectives in therapy that marginalize the LGBTQ population. Graduate students and clinicians who participate will learn inclusive language about sex, relationships, and the body.
