You are a resilient human who has a lot of love for yourself! Here you are, seeking out therapy, showing yourself care and love. It takes strength and honesty to ask for help. For some, it is hard to be loving to one’s self because of thoughts that are critical and unkind. Perhaps there are people in your life that don’t make you feel lovable, valid, and worthy of care (which you are!). Maybe the weight of the oppressive forces of our society are becoming too heavy for you to hold your head up high on your own. Whatever brought you here, welcome!
I work primarily using a combination of Acceptance Commitment therapy and Dialectical Behavioral techniques with a client-centered approach. I believe it is helpful to focus on thoughts and behaviors you find helpful to you and your life, and challenge and reframe the ones that aren’t serving you. I see you as the expert on you, and my role in your therapeutic journey is to provide you the space to explore yourself and build upon your strengths. I encourage the people who work with me to explore their emotions, the ways that emotions show up in the body, and the impacts of both body and emotions on our responses in life.
As a person with many intersecting marginalized identities, I have experienced the feelings that come from being oppressed by others, and I am familiar with the resulting self repression. In the therapeutic space, I encourage the people who work with me to reclaim their sense of self and their physical beings. Too many of us have been discouraged to connect with our bodies in a safe and supportive way, but I have found that learning to re-engage with ourselves and our bodies can lead to a sense of connectedness with ourselves. From this place of connection, we can better identify and validate our needs and wants. I’m not here to mold you to the norm. I’m here to assist you in creating your own guidebook to life that YOU want to live, breaking down the systems that took away your autonomy in the first place.
